The Spaceship House
Urbandale, Iowa
Mr. Koethe isn’t living in a 1960’s era spaceship house. No, it is a well manicured mansion right in the middle of Urbandale, Iowa. And it just happens to look like a spaceship.
This unique Des Moines suburb acreage was constructed in 1993. It was originally out in the country surrounded by corn and soybean fields. Urban sprawl eventually surrounded the spaceship looking home. It has an underground 6,000 sq foot garage complete with a car wash bay. The lower level also has a large rec center area and a space to display art. An elevator and spiral staircase takes you 35 feet up to the main living area; which has panoramic views from the circular 2nd level. The home has a gated driveway, a few ponds, what looks like a moat, a permanent resident and security. This is definitely one of the more unique homes in Iowa. Mr Koethe is a well known business man in the Des Moines area, and he wanted to build a unique house in Urbandale. it quickly became known as the spaceship house.

Such a cool home. An old friend of mine worked for Lemar back in the day.
A firm my father worked for supplied the structural steel for the project. He was so impressed with the engineering. Some great local talent went into that house.
