It features a 56-foot-tall (17 m) steel-sided structure designed in the appearance of a chicken rising up from the top of the building. (wikipedia)

Johnny Reb’s Chick, Chuck and Shake

Johnny Reb’s Chick, Chuck and Shake restaurant first opened in 1956 on the new busy intersection on the new section of highway 41. In 1963, the owner Tubby Davis, built a 56 foot tall chicken shaped structure over the top of the restaurant as a way to advertise. The steel structure was designed by Georgia Tech architectural student Hubert PuckettIt. It was built with googley eyes that rolled, a beak that clucked and a comb that moved. However when they turned on the mechanism, every window shattered and they could not figure out how to stop the vibration. So the chicken had to remain motionless. (Roadside America)  Davis sold the restaurant to his brother a few years later and in 1974 it became a KFC franchise. The chicken was so well known that people refer to the chicken when giving directions. “Turn left at the big chicken.” Pilots would also use the chicken as a landmark. Colonel Sanders himself visited the restaurant, and ordered the chicken torn down. They were promoting Col. Sanders, not a big chicken. But the Marietta KFC performed better than any other KFC and so the chicken stayed.

The 1993 Storm

A wind storm in January of 1993 pulled off parts of the chicken. When inspectors took a look at the battered chicken, they discovered that there was severe structural damage caused by decades of pigeon poop (Roadside America). The chicken would have to come down. The patrons were outraged and KFC announced they would spend $700,000 to rebuild the chicken and restaurant. Pepsi Co. also donated to this worthy cause and as you can see their logo prominently displayed on the neck. After this huge renovation the chicken flew again and finally it could roll it’s eyes and cluck.

The 2017 Remodel

The Big Chicken got a $2.2 million dollar complete make over in 2017. The restaurant was closed from January to May and a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held May 11, 2017. The exterior was redesigned as well as the interior was completely overhauled to the chains newest design, complete with a small gift shop area and loads of memorabilia. Also aded was a screened in porch, an addition of 1,185 square feet and 94 seats in the dining area. “Our goal for this remodel was to uphold and maintain the integrity of the Big Chicken, while preserving it for future generations to enjoy,” KBP president Mike Kulp said in a news release. An iconic landmark, a beloved beacon… This chicken is going to live on for a long time to come.
