The Miami Marine Stadium closed in 1992, following the aftermath of Hurricane Andrew. it was declared an unsafe building under Miami-Dade County building code on September 18, 1992. The building site has been fenced off and has been off limits to the public ever since. Some adventuring explorers have photographed the stadium as it crumbles with every passing year. (Keep reading below for information about restoration).

The parking lot is used for events including the annual Miami boat show. The property’s parking lots are regularly used for events, but the stadium itself is not for public use and is private property of the city of Miami. It was listed on 4/2/2018 on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Stadium, dedicated as the Ralph Munroe Marine Stadium, was built in 1963 in Virginia Key, Fl. It was designed by architect Hilario Candela, a 28-year-old immigrant from Cuba. The 6,566 seat stadium was built for 2 million dollars and is the first stadium purpose-built for powerboat racing in the United States. When it was constructed, the 326-foot roof was the longest span of cantilevered concrete. It was an engineering marvel consisting of a dramatically cantilevered folded plate roof supported by eight big slanted columns. This clever design allowed spectators to appreciate the full height of the posts and enjoy an unobstructed view over the watercourse.

The location, just south of downtown Miami, was an amazing place with it’s scenic views. The stadium was a premiere boat racing viewing stadium hosting world class powerboats which included Unlimited Hydroplane, Inboard, Outboard, Performance Craft, Stock, Modified, Grand National divisions and other event races. It also hosted the Orange Bowl Regatta (power boat races), the Bill Muncey Invitational and the ESPN All American Challenge Series. (wikipedia). It was also used as a venue for concerts and shows with the stage on a barge floating in front of the stadium.

In 2008, a group, Friends of Miami Marine Stadium, was formed with the purpose of restoring the stadium. Check out their website to see how they are guiding the restoration of the Stadium.

There has not been any restoration work done yet on the stadium. One day this will be restored to it’s former glory. For now it is a beautiful abandoned place of industrial decay.
